Every November, courtrooms across the country fill with balloons, grandparents, siblings and happy tears. On National Adoption Day, judges finalize adoptions and families are made whole, forever.

National Adoption Day is Saturday, November 21, 2026. Whatcom County Superior Court will celebrate a little early, on Thursday, November 5, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Whatcom County Courthouse in Bellingham.

What Is National Adoption Day?

National Adoption Day began in 2000 to raise awareness of the many children in foster care who are waiting for permanent, loving homes. Courts in all 50 states now take part, finalizing adoptions together so each family's big day becomes a community celebration. November is also National Adoption Month. It's a good time to honor adoptive and birth families, foster parents, caseworkers, CASA volunteers and everyone else who helps children find permanency.
