Washington Business Licensing Services Is Going "Paperless"

Starting in July 2023, the Business Licensing Services (BLS) in Washington State introduced a major update to how businesses receive their license renewal notices. Instead of sending notices by traditional mail to the business's mailing address, BLS will now send electronic renewal notices directly to the email address listed on the business license account.
Why the Change?
This shift is part of a broader effort to modernize and streamline communications with business owners. By moving to email notifications, BLS plans to:
- Ensure faster delivery of important renewal information.
- Reduce reliance on physical mail, cutting costs and minimizing environmental impact.
- Provide a more convenient and accessible option for busy business owners.
What Business Owners Need to Do
- Check and Update Your Email Address: Make sure that the email address on file with BLS is current and monitored regularly. If the email address is outdated or incorrect, you could miss critical renewal reminders.
- Look for Emails from BLS: Renewal notices will now come through your inbox. Keep an eye out for emails from Business Licensing Services and check your spam or junk folders if you think you’ve missed a notice.
- Request Paper Notices if Needed: If you prefer to continue receiving renewal notices via traditional mail, you must specifically request paper notices through BLS. Otherwise, email will be the default method moving forward.
